Commencement of new mandatory standard for child restraints for use in motor vehicles

Published

The Minister for Small Business has declared a new mandatory safety standard for child restraints in motor vehicles which commences on 19 September 2014.

This new safety standard replaces a previous mandatory standard and references the 2013 version of the Australian / New Zealand Standard Child restraint systems for use in motor vehicles. AS/NZS 1754:2013.

The new mandatory safety standard declares, with some variations, that child restraints conform to the 2013, 2010 and 2004 versions of AS/NZS 1754. Child restraints that conform to the 2000 version of AS/NZS 1754 are not covered by the new mandatory standard and can no longer be sold.

The statement explaining the new mandatory standard can be found on the Federal Register for Legislative Instruments.
