Motorcycle helmets

A motorcycle helmet is designed to protect a motorcyclist’s head in the event of an accident. Motorcycle helmets feature a:

• hard outer shell capable of resisting penetration
• soft inner shell to absorb 'impact energy'
• retention system, which is usually a strap fitted to the lower jaw area, that ensures the helmet stays in place.

Some motorcycle helmets also include additional features, such as visors, ventilation holes and/or face shields.

In the event of an accident, a motorcyclist can suffer serious head injuries or death due to an unsafe, ineffective helmet.
