The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will be inspecting showbags ahead of the Royal Darwin Show to ensure products included in the bags meet mandatory safety requirements.
“Having fun with showbags is an important part of the show experience, but that fun can quickly disappear if toys and other products contained in the showbags are not safe,” ACCC deputy chair Peter Kell said.
"It’s important that the ACCC and other consumer protection agencies inspect showbags each year. In general most showbags are safe, however surveillance over the past few years has resulted in a number of recalls," Mr Kell said.
"The inspection doesn’t certify that the bags are safe, but it involves a good check against the many mandatory standards and product bans enforced by the ACCC."
On 1 January this year, the ACCC has assumed full responsibility for product safety regulation in the Northern Territory.
"It’s a responsibility the ACCC takes very seriously, which is why the ACCC will be at the show, talking with showbag suppliers to make sure they understand and comply with mandatory safety requirements."
Mr Kell said the ACCC will be inspecting showbags on Tuesday before the show opens on Thursday.
