Warning on toys containing magnets - News alert

Victorians are urged to check toys for loose or dangerous magnets, following the recent death of a Queensland toddler.

Small, strong magnets are used to attach parts in children’s toys, or to make toys stick to other objects.

A child who puts magnets in their mouth can choke or suffocate. Swallowed magnets can also cause serious internal injuries to a child’s digestive system.

There is an Australia-wide mandatory standard for toys containing magnets. These toys must come with warning labels on the packaging and instructions to prevent injuries. 

Advice for buying toys with magnets

• Make sure the toy is appropriate for the child’s age.
• Check the magnets cannot come off easily.
• Regularly check toys for signs of wear and tear, and always dispose of magnets if they come loose.
• If you suspect a child has swallowed magnets, seek urgent medical help to prevent choking, suffocation, serious infections and death.
