Basketball rings & backboards

The mandatory standard covers specific safety marking requirements for basketball rings and backboards.

About basketball rings

Basketball rings are circular rings usually made of metal and attached to basketball backboards. The backboards are then generally attached to posts or other similar structures.

During the game of basketball, players throw the ball through the basketball ring to score.

Basketball rings are also known as basketball hoops.

The mandatory safety standard applies to basketball rings and backboards that need installation, or those that can lead to death or serious injury if users swing on them (such as full-size or almost full-size basketball rings with a weighted base). It covers specific safety marking requirements.

The mandatory safety standard does not apply to toy basketball rings and backboards.

The Trade Practices Regulation (Consumer Product Safety Standard) (Basketball Rings and Backboards) 2005 sets out the mandatory requirements for basketball rings and backboards.
