Recall of faulty hair dryers

Fair Trading Minister, Virginia Judge, is urging consumers to check their hair dryers following a national recall of Woolworths-branded products that pose a potential fire and electrical hazard.

Ms Judge said Woolworths initiated a recall after it received three complaints about its Woolworths Essentials travel hair dryer (model HD-1204).

“One customer claimed to have received an electric shock, one reported the unit as tripping a safety switch, and one customer reported small flames coming from the unit,” she said.

“These travel hair dryers were on sale in Woolworths and Safeway outlets from September 2009 but were taken off the shelves in late-December.

“A recall notice was published in major metropolitan and regional newspapers around NSW on 1 January 2010 and ran again today in Sydney.

“Fair Trading has been advised that more than 2,000 units were sold in NSW in Woolworths and Safeway stores.

“If you have purchased one of these hair dryers, please stop using it immediately and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.”

Ms Judge said the recall is limited to the travel hair dryer with the model number ‘HD-1204’.

“There is no suggestion other Woolworths Essentials products present a danger to consumers,” she said.

“However, if you are unsure whether your hair dryer has been recalled take it to a Woolworths or Safeway outlet for identification.”
