Testing has cleared Go Go Guinea Pigs, a popular children's toy, in time for Christmas.
"After reports alleging that high levels of antimony had been detected in Go Go Hamsters overseas, ACCC staff bought a number of the toys from Australian retailers," ACCC Deputy Chairman Peter Kell said today.
"The samples were immediately sent to the National Measurement Institute for testing.
"The samples included three different Go Go Guinea Pigs – Chunk, which is white; Pipsqueak, which is yellow; and Mr Squiggles, which is brown. Two different accessible parts, nose and fur, of each sample were tested," he said.
NMI is a National Association of Testing Authorities accredited test laboratory and the samples were all tested in accordance with the methodology described in the AS/NZS ISO 8124.3:2003.
"Compliance with this standard becomes mandatory on 1 January 2010.
"The samples were tested for levels of antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury and selenium. All of the samples tested were found to be well below the level specified in the standard for all of the elements."
