NSW Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts is warning the public about a national voluntary recall of two types of Tommee Tippee Comforter baby dummies, sold Australia-wide between 1 August 2010 and 17 August 2011.
The recall by the supplier, Jackel Pty Ltd, is of Tommee Tippee Cherub Comforters and Tommee Tippee Soft Rim Comforters as follows:
Tommee Tippee Cherub Comforter - 0-6m SKU 433286/1 and 6+m 433287/1
– latex baby dummy with two comforters in a pack.
Tommee Tippee Soft Rim Comforter – 0-6m SKU 432523 and 6-18m SKU 432524
– silicone baby dummy with two comforters in a pack.
The Minister said consumers should immediately remove dummies from children and return the dummies to the supplier or the place of purchase, for a full refund.
The Cherub comforter can pose a choking hazard when the shield separates. A hairline fracture has been detected on the shield.
The Soft Rim comforter can pose a choking hazard when the teat separates. There may be a tear in the silicone teat.
Mr Roberts said the supplier had advised approximately 245,000 dummies had been sold over the last year – 170,000 of the Cherub dummies and 75,000 of the Soft Rim dummies.
The Cherub comforter was sold from stores including Woolworths, Franklins, Metcash, Big W, Target, pharmacies, Baby Bunting, David Jones and baby specialty stores.
The Soft Rim comforter was sold from stores including Big W, Toys ‘R’ Us and pharmacies.
The recall was prompted after a consumer approached NSW Fair Trading, claiming a Tommee Tippee Cherub dummy had come apart in her hand when she attempted to use it for the first time.
The consumer noticed all four dummies appeared to have a crack on the shield near where the teat is embedded. NSW Fair Trading visited the consumer’s premises to inspect the dummies and contacted the supplier.
The Minister said there had been a mandatory standard for baby dummies in place since October 2006. It covers requirements for design, construction and safety labelling.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is responsible for the national administration of recalls and the details of the products, including photographs, are available at www.recalls.gov.au.
NSW Fair Trading is continuing to work with the ACCC in reviewing the operation of the recall.
