Why the product is recalled
Asbestos has been detected in the exhaust and internal engine gaskets of the 2015 and 2016 models and in the muffler air injection system gasket of 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 models.
What the hazards are to consumers
Exposure to asbestos during normal use of these vehicles is unlikely. However, exposure to asbestos during servicing or repairs of the vehicles is possible and owners should not undertake or commission any repairs or servicing of these vehicles. Breathing in asbestos fibres can cause a range of serious medical conditions, including asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.
What consumers should do
Owners of affected vehicles should immediately cease conducting or arranging any repairs or servicing of these vehicles.
Southern Cross Distributors will write to all vehicle owners to arrange to buy back vehicles. Owners will be asked to provide some proof of purchase including the purchase price that they paid for the vehicle (by way of an invoice, receipt, bank statement, credit card statement, purchase agreements or evidence of online payments) together with a statutory declaration confirming that they are the current owner of the vehicle. Southern Cross Distributors will provide assistance to complete such a declaration. Arrangements for the return of the vehicles and payments of refunds will be made between Southern Cross Distributors and owners. The price paid for the vehicle will be refunded as well as any other reasonable costs that can be shown to be associated with purchase, for example transportation and delivery. The refund will be effected by bank transfer (if details are provided) or cheque within 28 days of receipt of the vehicle.
If you believe you own an affected vehicle and are not contacted by Southern Cross Distributors, contact the Customer Service Team on 1300 668 835. If you no longer own an affected vehicle, please contact Southern Cross Distributors and provide details of the new owner.
