Changes to Australian product safety legislation

Legislative changes due to take effect in January 2011 will make complying with Australian product safety laws easier for local and overseas suppliers.

Penalties & consequences

Supplying products that fail to meet requirements of product safety regulations can make you liable for product recalls and heavy fines.

Latest legal cases and undertakings:

  • Date commenced: 2nd July 2010
    ANE Furniture Pty Ltd (ANE) is a manufacturer and importer of household furniture, including bunk beds.
  • Date commenced: 29th March 2010
    Court enforceable undertaking obtained that Vinetex will refrain from supplying children’s nightwear products that do not comply with the standard.
  • Date commenced: 29th March 2010
    Following a voluntary recall of 35 lines of garmets from its Big W stores, Woolworths has provided an undertaking refrain from supplying children’s nightwear products that do not comply with the Standard. Woolworths will also make a $200,000 donation to the Sydney’s Children’s Hospital.

Mandatory standards

alphabet letter magnets The mandatory standard for children's toys containing magnets was declared on 16 February 2010 and comes into effect on 1 July 2010. It covers warning labels required for packaging, and instructions to prevent serious illness that can result if children swallow hazardous magnets.
