Safety standards & bans

The purpose of a mandatory standard is to make particular safety or information features on products compulsory for legal supply of the product into the Australian market. It is an offence to supply goods that do not comply with mandatory standards.
Bans can be placed on products and product-related services if there is a risk that they may cause serious injury, illness or death.
The ACCC is looking to improve mandatory Australian product safety standards. This includes updating mandatory standards to recognise suitable overseas standards alongside Australian standards.
