The Standards Australia Committee, CS-003 Safety Requirements for Children's Furniture, has received the prestigious United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman's Commendation Award. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is a member of the Committee.
The award's recipients are chosen for their significant, lifesaving contributions to consumer product safety.
Colin Blair, Chief Executive Officer of Standards Australia, congratulated the committee members and chair of the committee, Mr Dave Strachan from the Queensland Office of Fair Trading.
“The award is a testament to the brilliant work CS-003 Safety Requirements for Children's Furniture has been quietly undertaking for many years. The award follows Committee CS-003’s recent Outstanding Committee Award issued at Standards Australia’s Mid-Year Council meeting in Canberra,” Mr Blair said.
Mr Blair said CS-003 is responsible for significant achievements in standardisation and product safety, including the revision of the mandated standard, AS NZS 2172 – Cots for household Use, and the creation of a new Test Method Standard for Infant Sleeping Surfaces, AS 8811.1, within the space of a year.
“This was an important revision for child safety, as the introduction of a new test method for infant sleeping surfaces - which is a world first - and should go some way to resolving one of the primary contributing factors to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome,” Mr Blair concluded.
The new test method will also be presented at the ICPHSO international product safety conference on the Gold Coast on 9-10 October 2013, co-hosted by the ACCC.
The Chairman’s Commendation Award was created by CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum in 2011 to identify and honor people, organizations, businesses, state and local governments and other groups who have worked to reduce deaths, prevent injuries and improve consumer product safety.
