SAFETY standards for exercise bikes and treadmills have been maintained to ensure the safety of users, Minister for Small Business Michael McCormack says.

Tragically, between one and two children die in Australian homes every year as a result of non-compliant corded blinds and curtains. Similar deaths occur regularly across the world and the ACCC is joining international regulators to warn of the hidden dangers associated with corded blinds and curtains.

Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe today issued a reminder of the dangers of treadmills to young children.

Treadmills being sold without adequate warning labels were a major concern following an intensive product safety campaign carried out by Western Australian Consumer Protection.

Treadmills are a convenient way for adults to stay fit, but they can be extremely dangerous for infants and children. Children have been caught in treadmills as recently as this January.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission today urged parents and suppliers to put child safety first with fitness equipment, particularly treadmills.

The ACT Commissioner for Fair Trading, Mr Brett Phillips, is reminding consumers of the need to be aware of the dangers that some household items can pose to children.
