Multi-functional blender recall

NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe is urging consumers to check their kitchen blenders following the voluntary national recall of the Abode Multi-Functional Blender model number HY-6068A-1.

Mr Stowe said the multi-functional blender had been sold nationally in BIG W stores between April 2010 and October 2011 and Kmart stores between December 2009 and September 2011.

Consumers should cease using the product immediately. Affected products can be identified by an Abode logo on the front of the blender. The model number can be verified on the sticker on the rear of the blender.

Big W customers should return the product to any BIG W store for a full refund. For further information, consumers can call BIG W on 1300 244 999.

Kmart customers should return the product to any Kmart store for a full refund. For further information, consumers can call 1800 124 125 or go to www.kmart.com.au.

Mr Stowe said the multi-functional blender was being recalled due to a potential safety hazard because the rubber seal may become dislodged and catch in the blender blades during use.

“If damaged, the rubber seal may mix with food and pose an ingestion hazard,” he said.

Mr Stowe congratulated the suppliers for acting swiftly to remove the products from their store shelves.

“Thankfully no injuries have been reported to date,” he said.

“Voluntary recalls play an important role in product safety by minimising risk to consumers.

“By working closely with government, manufacturers and sellers of electrical goods can ensure consumers are readily notified, with the aim of removing or rectifying any unsafe products sold to the public.”

Under the Australian Consumer Law, a supplier is obliged to recall consumer goods immediately they are aware the goods may cause injury, do not comply with a safety standard or are banned.

When a supplier initiates a recall, they must notify the Commonwealth Minister within 48 hours of recalling the goods. Failure to do so is breaking the law.
