NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe is urging consumers who have purchased haveyoumetmissjones ceramic, portable lamp kits to stop using them because they are not safe.
The haveyoumetmissjones lamp kits, which are supplied by 240v, pose a risk because the lampholder does not hold the bulb securely inside the lamp base and the bulb can fall out.
Mr Stowe said NSW Fair Trading had organised a national recall of the lamp kits, in consultation with the Sydney business owner of haveyoumetmissjones.
5,240 lamp kits have been sold nationally, through gift and interior design stores, as well as direct sales from haveyoumetmissjones.com.au.
429 customers have been notified of the recall.
Anyone who has purchased a lamp kit should stop using it immediately and call 02 8339 0777 to organise a replacement power supply and lampholder.
The lamp kits include a 240v plug, a flexible cord and switch and a lampholder, as well as a figurine that comes in a range of animal and bird shapes, including cockatoos, squirrels, owls, rabbits, starfish, deer, mice, cats, dogs, fish and penguins.
Haveyoumetmissjones is contacting its online customers directly about the recall and using retailer databases to do a mass mailout. The company is also using facebook and twitter to warn consumers about the recall.
A replacement kit will be provided and it will include a transformer, flexible cord and switch and an LED lampholder.
Commissioner Stowe said there had not been any incident of harm but the lamp kits posed a particular risk to children.
“These lamp kits are designed to appeal to children,” he said.
“Children are likely to play with them.” The Commissioner urged people to tell their family and friends about the recall.
“We want to ensure no one comes to any harm from these products,” he said. He applauded the efforts of the company in helping organise the recall.
