Risks and injuries from the product

Yo-yo water balls are toys thrown and returned to the hand (similar to a yo-yo).

Yo-yo water balls can put children at risk of strangulation due to the length of the cord.

If the ball breaks and children are exposed to the liquid they are at risk of an allergic reaction, infection, or irritation.

Products the ban applies to

There is a permanent ban on yo-yo water balls.

Yo-yo water balls and similar products have:

  • an elastic cord capable of extending at least 500mm long. The cord usually has a loop on one end to wear around the finger.
  • a soft synthetic ball on the other end of the cord. The ball may be filled with liquid or air, and/or contain a novelty.

View the full details of this ban at Consumer Protection Notice No. 20 of 2011.

Products the ban does not apply to

The ban does not apply to:

  • outdoor and sporting toys. For example, a ball on an elastic tension cord that can be anchored and is used to practice tennis
  • a bat with a ball attached by an elastic cord
  • products known as the 'Yo-be sling disc'.
