Basketball rings are circular rings usually made of metal. They can be attached to structures with or without basketball backboards.
The basketball rings or backboards are attached to posts or other similar structures.
The mandatory safety standard applies to:
- basketball rings and backboards for domestic use
- portable basketball systems for domestic use.
Products the mandatory standard does not apply to
The mandatory safety standard does not apply to toy basketball rings or backboards for toy basketball rings. A toy basketball ring is a miniature basketball ring with or without a backboard. It is not designed to be attached to a fixture.
Examples of toy basketball rings are:
- toy basketball rings for use with a miniature soft ball
- basketball rings that hang over internal doors
- basketball rings attached to internal doors by suction cups or a similar temporary method
- miniature portable basketball systems intended for use by toddlers.
Complying with the mandatory standard
The mandatory standard requires basketball rings and backboards, and its packaging, to have a safety warning notice and a warning symbol. The statement must be visible and easy to read.

Warning information to include
Basketball rings and backboards must be accompanied by a written warning notice and a warning symbol.
Written warning and warning symbol
The written warning on a basketball ring or a backboard must contain the following words:
WARNING: IMPROPER INSTALLATION OR SWINGING ON THE RING MAY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH
There must also be a warning symbol.

Warning notice on the front of a backboard
The front of the backboards must be permanently marked with the following warning:
WARNING: SWINGING ON THE RING MAY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH

Placement of the written warning and warning symbol
For a packaged basketball ring or backboard, the written warning and warning symbol must be:
- marked where it is easily seen on the packaging, or
- on a label attached to the packaging.
If the basketball ring or backboard is not packaged, the written warning and warning symbol must be:
- easily seen on the ring or blackboard, or
- on a label or tag attached to the ring or blackboard.
Installation instructions for safe product use
The product must be supplied with information about how to safely install a basketball ring or backboard. This requirement does not apply to a basketball ring or backboard supplied as part of a portable basketball system.
The instructions must:
- give details of the supporting structure to which the ring or backboard is to be fixed
- give details of which hardware to use to fix the ring or backboard to the supporting structure
- strongly warn against fixing the ring or backboard to brickwork
- include advice to consult a structural engineer if there is any doubt about how safe or stable the installation is.
