Products the mandatory standard applies to

A trolley jack comes with:

  • wheels for guiding the trolley jack
  • a handle for positioning the trolley jack under the vehicle and for pumping the hydraulic cylinders
  • hydraulic cylinders for lifting the vehicle.

Products the mandatory standard does not apply to

This mandatory standard doesn’t apply to:

  • jacks designed to raise an entire vehicle
  • jacks used to move a vehicle
  • vehicle jacks.

There is a separate mandatory standard for vehicle jacks. Vehicle jacks are used to change wheels over to the spare on a vehicle.

Complying with the mandatory standard

The mandatory standard sets out requirements for the design, construction, performance and labelling of trolley jacks.

Design and construction

Trolley jacks must meet the design and construction requirements of the mandatory standard.

Trolley jacks must:

  • be made from appropriate materials and have protective coatings
  • comply with head cap dimensions
  • have overload protection
  • have a mechanism to prevent overtravel.

The nominated capacity of a trolley jack must not be less than 750 kg.

Performance

Trolley jacks must meet the performance requirements of the mandatory standard.

Trolley jacks must comply with the requirements for loss of height under load, overload capacity and eccentric load specified by the mandatory standard.

Testing

The mandatory standard specifies testing to make sure trolley jacks comply with the requirements. Suppliers should organise product testing through specialist testing laboratories.

Mandatory standard details

The Consumer Goods (Trolley Jacks) Safety Standard 2017 sets out the mandatory requirements for the supply of trolley jacks.

The mandatory standard is based on the voluntary Australian Standard AS 2615:2016 Hydraulic trolley jacks (with variations). You can buy AS 2615:2016 from Standards Australia, Intertek Inform or Accuris.

When a product does not comply

Fines and penalties may apply for failure to comply with a mandatory safety or information standard. For more information, see fines and penalties.
