About baby exercise jumpers
A baby exercise jumper is a suspended sling style seat hanging from a spring and/or rubber cable that is clamped above a door frame. The baby bounces in the seat by pushing with their feet against the floor.
Child safety experts do not recommend baby exercise jumpers, due to the serious injuries babies can suffer when using them.
Risks and injuries from the product
Babies using exercise jumpers can suffer serious injuries including:
- limb and head injuries after falling. This can happen if the laces snap under tension or if the baby is not securely strapped into the harness
- injuries to fingers if they become trapped or pinched in the springs and chains on the jumper
- injuries from being lurched into the doorway frame or pushed by another child.
To avoid serious injuries when using a baby exercise jumper, make sure they can’t access or reach:
- bench tops or tables where there may be hot food, drinks or sharp objects
- fireplaces and heaters, ovens and other appliances
- blinds and curtain cords.
Things to look for when buying the product
Serious injuries have happened to babies using baby exercise jumpers.
There isn’t a mandatory safety standard for baby exercise jumpers, but the following is a guide.
- Look for a strong independent frame or a secure device for attaching the jumper to a door frame.
- Check that strong, secure laces are sewn into the crotch strap. These should be threaded through the waist strap to avoid them snapping.
How to use the product safely
Set up and maintain the baby exercise jumper safely
When you start using the baby exercise jumper, make sure you:
- follow the product assembly instructions
- follow product guidelines for your baby’s age, size and development
- check the laces regularly to make sure they are not worn and will not snap under the baby’s weight
- cover exposed springs and chains to stop your baby’s fingers from being trapped or pinched.
Keep it short, secure and supervised
Make sure your baby is safe in the exercise jumper by:
- always supervising them to prevent falls, bumping into walls or the doorframe
- keeping them securely fitted and strapped into the harness so they won’t fall out while jumping
- not using the baby exercise jumper for any longer than 15 minutes at a time. Overuse can lead to possible delays in learning to walk.
