Consumer warning about 3D TVs

Published

Consumer Protection WA is warning Western Australians to consider the potential health risks associated with 3D televisions before buying one.

Anyone planning to purchase a 3D TV and glasses is advised to speak to a staff member in-store or visit the manufacturer’s website and consider the health warnings to determine whether the product is suitable for them and their family. If consumers are concerned or experience any adverse effects, they are advised to consult a medical practitioner.

Letters have been sent to electrical retailers across WA asking them to promote this advice in advertising and signs developed by Consumer Protection have been provided for shop displays.

Commissioner for Consumer Protection Anne Driscoll said there is always a worry when a new product arrives in the marketplace that people will not research it properly.

“At this stage there is little knowledge about the potential side effects of 3D televisions but there is a lot of hype surrounding the product and it is bound to be in popular demand,” she said.

“We are pleased that some retailers are taking the lead by displaying signs which outline health concerns linked to 3D TVs, such as a potential risk for young children, mums-to-be and people with epilepsy.

“Advice from one leading manufacturer includes avoiding watching 3D TV under fluorescent lighting or in direct sunlight.

“This advice also suggests that screens should not be placed near stairs, balconies or other areas where an accident could occur because a viewer becomes disorientated.

“It is essential that consumers are fully aware of both the health warnings and accident prevention advice before they purchase a 3D TV and put it in their home.”
