Consumers warned over hair product with high levels of formaldehyde

Consumers are being warned against using the ‘Keratin Complex Intense Rx’ hair conditioner product, which has been found to have high levels of free formaldehyde, said Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer, David Bradbury.

Mr Bradbury today issued a product safety warning notice highlighting the health dangers of high levels of formaldehyde in the Intense Rx hair conditioner product.

“The Keratin Complex Intense Rx product was recently recalled by the supplier because it contained timonacic acid, an ingredient that was not declared on the packaging and is not approved for use in cosmetics in Australia,” said Mr Bradbury.

“The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) also tested the product and found that it contained levels of ‘free formaldehyde’ that are in excess of the allowable limits.

“Formaldehyde can cause skin sensitisation, sensory irritation and even cancer in cases of high chronic exposure.

“The supplier of Intense Rx unfortunately downplayed the health hazards of their product in their voluntary recall notice. Suppliers who voluntarily recall products must properly communicate not only the nature of a product defect but also the danger to consumers.

“Anyone who has purchased Intense Rx should stop using the product and return it to the supplier. Consumers who have experienced any reaction or injury after using the product should seek medical attention and contact the supplier or the ACCC on 1300 302 502.”
