NSW Fair Trading is warning consumers with Samsung brand top loader washing machines to be aware of possible fire danger following a recent house fire in Ryde.
The fire is the second in a month sparked by a Samsung washing machine. Since April 2013 Samsung have had in place a voluntary recall on six top loader washing machine models.
NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe said any consumers with a Samsung washing machine should check the model number to see if it is subject to the recall.
“The fire is caused when water condenses on to an internal motor connection causing possible overheating,” Mr Stowe said.
“Samsung is offering a free in-home rectification for any consumer with an affected machine.
“As part of the recall qualified technicians will examine the electrical connections and where required enclose them within a plastic membrane to prevent water penetration.
“Consumers who are concerned about their machine should contact Samsung's Product Safety Hotline on 1800 239 655 to arrange the free in-home service.
“Since the recall was put in place around 41 per cent of potentially affected models have been serviced. It is of concern that some people have not taken up this offer and I am urging all affected consumers to contact Samsung and arrange their service.”
Fire & Rescue NSW Fire Investigator, Station Officer Mick Forbes, said it was lucky there wasn’t more damage at the most recent fire.
“The good work of firefighters contained the fire to the laundry, which was badly damaged,” he said.
“At any time, should a fire occur in your home, get out, stay out and call Triple Zero (000).”

- SW65V9WIP/XSA
- SW70SPWIP/XSA
- SW80SPWIP/XSA
- WA85GWGIP/XSA
- WA85GWWIP/XSA
