Reason the product is recalled
The spare part ignition switch may have imperfections in its ball springs. In the long term these imperfections may result in the failure of the ignition switch, which may cause the key position to inadvertently move from the "ON" position to the "ACC" position while the car is moving.
The hazards to consumers
If the ball spring within the ignition switch fails, the key may move from the “ON” position to the “ACC” position whilst the vehicle is in motion. This will cause the engine to stop running and the power supply to the SRS airbag system will be cut. If the engine stops running, the vehicle will unexpectedly slow down and stop, posing an accident hazard to the occupants of the vehicle and other road users. If the vehicle was involved in a collision at this time, the airbag system would not react as designed, increasing the risk of injury to the driver and/or vehicle occupants.
What consumers should do
Vehicles of the above models and model year ranges that have had their ignition switch replaced between 17 February 2017 and 14 April 2019 may be affected.
Known owners of potentially affected vehicles will be contacted by Subaru Australia's Customer Relations Team and booked in for an inspection at their nearest/preferred Subaru dealership. Vehicles will be inspected and any vehicles found to have been fitted with an affected ignition switch will have a replacement ignition switch fitted free of charge.
For further information, contact the Subaru Customer Relations Team by phoning 1300 550 994 (Monday to Friday, 8am-8pm AEST and Saturday, 8.30am-5pm AEST) or email feedback@subaru.com.au
