Exercise cycles

The ACCC concluded its review of the mandatory standard for exercise cycles on 19 October 2017 and the standard remains unchanged.

The mandatory standard for exercise cycles prescribes requirements for construction and design. It also mandates instructions for use of the exercise cycle.

Mandatory standard

Consumer Protection Notice No. 9 of 1997 sets out the mandatory requirements for exercise cycles.

This mandatory standard is based on certain sections of the voluntary Australian standard AS 4092:1993 Exercise cycles—safety requirements. AS 4092:1993 is available from SAI Global.

Key requirements

These requirements provide an overview of the mandatory standard. Suppliers must not rely on this information as a complete guide to compliance.

Design, construction and testing

Exercise cycles must have:

  • protective guards that prevent a child's fingers reaching hazardous moving parts while the bike is operating
  • specific testing to ensure that exercise cycles meet requirements for entrapment hazards
  • the seat and its support tested to resist failure which could impale or injure the user.

Suppliers need to organise this testing through specialist laboratories.

User instructions

The user instructions supplied with the exercise cycle must outline the following:

  • assembly
  • maintenance
  • correct adjustment of the seat.
