Voluntary Takata-related recalls

A compulsory recall applies to certain types of airbags made by Takata Corporation that use a chemical called phase-stabilised ammonium nitrate (PSAN) as a propellant and are fitted to vehicles or retrieved from vehicles as spare parts. These 'Affected Takata Airbag Inflators' have an inherent design defect that creates a safety risk.

In addition to the compulsory recall, there are three categories of Takata PSAN-related voluntary recalls and one Takata NADI 5-AT-related voluntary recall:

1. vehicles fitted with a different type of Takata airbag inflator that is not subject to the compulsory recall and have been improperly manufactured
2. vehicles fitted with a Takata NADI (non-azide driver inflator) type 5-AT airbag
3. certain trucks that are fitted with defective Takata airbag inflators
4. vehicles that had an Affected Takata Airbag Inflator replaced by an airbag that was not an Affected Takata Airbag Inflator that may have been incorrectly installed (and are now being recalled again to ensure correct installation.

Takata-related recalls to replace improperly manufactured replacement airbag inflators

Some critical vehicles have been identified as being fitted with a different type of Takata airbag inflator which is not subject to the compulsory recall, and they are being voluntarily recalled because they may have been improperly manufactured. These airbags have been fitted to some vehicles as replacement parts under a previous Takata recall.

In the event of an accident, the improperly manufactured airbag could rupture which may cause metal fragments to pass through the airbag cushion and into the vehicle interior resulting in possible injury or death of vehicle occupants.

It is strongly recommended that owners of vehicles with critical airbags stop driving their vehicles immediately. The supplier should offer to arrange for your vehicle to be towed to the place of replacement or for a qualified technician to travel to you (or some similar arrangement) so that you do not have to drive your vehicle if you do not wish to do so.

Recalled vehicles

Takata NADI (non-azide driver inflator) type 5-AT airbag

The NADI 5-AT inflator has a different propellant to the inflators under the compulsory recall and is not subject to that notice.

The airbag inflator could rupture, causing sharp metal fragments to enter the vehicle cabin at high speed and potentially killing or injuring vehicle occupants.

Audi, BMW, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Suzuki and Toyota vehicles manufactured between 1996 and 2000 may be fitted with these airbag inflators. 

Owners of affected vehicles should stop driving their vehicle immediately and contact their vehicle manufacturer to organise their free urgent vehicle inspection. 

Vehicles will be either towed to the place of inspection or a mobile technician will inspect the vehicle at the consumer’s home or the vehicle’s location. The vehicle should not be driven to the inspection place.

If the vehicle is affected, the manufacturer will offer to buy-back the vehicle registered for road use from the owner at current market value. Manufacturers will arrange alternative transport options directly with affected vehicle owners until parts are available for airbag replacement (only BMW and Toyota intend to replace airbags), or until the buy-back process is completed.

Takata-related truck recalls

The compulsory recall was issued under laws providing for the recall of consumer goods. It covers vehicles with an Affected Takata Airbag Inflator that are supplied in Australia and are intended to be used, or are likely to be used, for personal, domestic or household use. The compulsory recall does not cover vehicles intended to be used for purely commercial purposes.

A number of suppliers of trucks with Affected Takata Airbag Inflators have initiated voluntary recalls. These suppliers are strongly encouraged to complete the voluntary recall as soon as practicable and conduct replacement of affected inflators within a time that is consistent with the compulsory recall’s timing for replacement.

Recalled vehicles

Takata-related recalls to correct previous installation

Some vehicles were previously recalled and had an Affected Takata Airbag Inflator replaced by an airbag that was not an Affected Takata Airbag Inflator. These vehicles are not covered by the compulsory recall as they are not fitted with an Affected Takata Airbag Inflator.

The replacement inflator in some vehicles may have been incorrectly installed. In the event of an accident, the frontal airbag may not inflate for deployment, increasing the risk of injury. Suppliers of these vehicles are recalling them again to ensure correct installation of the airbag.
