The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will be inspecting show bags today ahead of the Royal Darwin Show to ensure products meet mandatory safety requirements.
“Show bags are one of the most popular elements of the show but their contents need to be safe enough for show goers of all ages,” ACCC Northern Territory Regional Director Derek
Farrell said.
"The ACCC and other consumer protection agencies inspect show bags each year to help prevent injuries, illnesses and deaths related to unsafe toys and other products.”
The ACCC will be at the show, which is on 25-27 July, conducting spot checks and providing consumer safety information at their stall on the mezzanine level of the Foskey Pavilion.
The inspection will focus on:
- Toys with small parts that may present a choking hazard
- Projectile toys that may cause eye injury
- Sunglasses that are unlabelled that can potentially cause eye damage
- Aquatic toys and flotation aids
- Novelty toys and items that are banned, such as high powered magnets and novelty
cigarettes.
“If an unsafe toy is identified, the ACCC will be working with the suppliers to ensure that the toy is removed from all show bags before the show opens on Thursday,” Mr Farrell said.
