NSW Fair Trading product safety experts have inspected 346 show bags from eight suppliers to the 2014 Sydney Royal Easter Show, with no toys or novelty items failing tests.
Fair Trading Minister Stuart Ayres said inspections would continue on day one of the show today.
“Officers will be checking the showbag pavilion as well as products offered for sale and as prizes,” he said.
“Fair Trading has fostered an excellent relationship over many years with the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW and its suppliers and that is why we again find a perfect score in product safety. No items were required to be removed last year either.”
Mr Ayres said Fair Trading also carries out checks at the Newcastle, Castle Hill, Camden and Hawkesbury Shows.
“Inspectors check that projectile toys or toys for children aged less than three years-old have test reports proving products comply with Australian safety standards.”
Mr Ayres said Fair Trading yesterday inspected gas installations at mobile catering vendors inside the showgrounds, to ensure public safety.
“No issues were found that posed an immediate safety risk or concern. Fair Trading plumbing and gas inspectors also met with the Show’s on-site plumber/gasfitter to ensure he is aware of issues to monitor and follow-up,” he said.
“Today, Fair Trading safety inspectors will focus on electrical and gas appliances sold throughout the showgrounds to preclude the sale of unapproved and potentially dangerous articles.
“Compliance with safety and information standards under the Australian Consumer Law and the Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2004 is critical for public safety.
“Consumers buying electrical and gas products should always ask the salesperson to show them the approval number or the approval mark,” Mr Ayres concluded.
Electrical goods must comply with Australian Standard AS/NZS3100 or in the case of portable electrical power tools, AS/NZS3160. They must also have an Australian approval number or mark.
Examples of these marks and gas approval marks can be found at the NSW Fair Trading website. Advertising electrical articles or displaying electrical articles as gifts in promotions is also selling in accordance with provisions of the legislation.
