Vehicle support stands

The mandatory standard prescribes the requirements for the design, construction, safety marking, and packaging requirements of vehicle support stands.

About vehicle support stands

The mandatory standard was last updated on 1 December 2017 and applies to vehicle support stands of fixed or adjustable height that are used to support the axle or chassis of a vehicle.

Mandatory standard

The Consumer Goods (Vehicle Support Stands) Safety Standard 2017 sets out the mandatory requirements for the supply of vehicle support stands.

The mandatory standard is based on certain sections of the voluntary Australian Standard, AS 2538:2016 Vehicle Support Stands (available from SAI Global). The ACCC may be able to make a copy of the standard available for viewing at one of its offices subject to licensing conditions.

Design and construction

Materials

Vehicle support stands must be free from blow holes, hard spots, shrinkage defects, cracks or other defects which would negatively affect the strength of the material.

Stability

Vehicle support stands must be geometrically designed to stand, and to resist tipping.

Finish

The surface of a vehicle support stand must be free from hazardous projections and sharp edges.

Testing

While the mandatory standard includes some features you can visually check, such as instructions for use and marking and packaging, it also specifies testing to ensure that vehicle support stands meet requirements for design, construction and performance. Suppliers need to organise this testing through specialist laboratories, preferably with NATA accreditation.

Safety markings

Vehicle support stands must also be supplied with a range of information, including instructions for safe use, package marking and assembly instructions. A new warning notice must also be permanently marked on each vehicle support stand as follows:
